LEGO Purchaser's Guide: Finding The Right Set

LEGO Purchaser's Guide: Finding The Right Set

Ole Kirk Christiansen, who started making wooden toys, ironing boards and stepladders at his Billund, Denmark workshop, likely did not think of the fact that his colourful bricks, that he built at his own workshop, would later become the most loved toy manufacturer in the world.

His son and Godtfred were able to rescue Lego from disaster by taking the Lego in the opposite direction.

Ole Kirk Christiansen

Ole Kirk Christiansen is a Danish carpenter, who grew up in a small town on the edge of the countryside. He turned his passion for whittling, into one of the most sought-after toys. The building toys, referred to as LEGO bricks, are sold in over 130 countries are adored by children as well as adults.

In 1924, Ole's woodworking shop was completely destroyed by fire. The fire was caused by Ole's two sons who had stoked the fire with shavings of wood. Despite a lack of material, Ole rebuilt and soon the company grew by offering wooden toys.

During the yo-yo boom of the 1930s, the factory produced so many yo-yos unsellable that the business was close to going bankrupt. Vejle Bank provided a loan, and Ole was able rebuild the factory. Leg Godt, which is Danish meaning "play well" was renamed to reflect the new direction taken by the company.

Godtfred Christiansen

Godtfred Kirk Christiansen, who helped his father transform his wooden toy business into a worldwide toy empire, died in his residence in Billund, Denmark. He was 75 years old.

After a fire destroyed the wood toy factory owned by the family, Godtfred decided the company should focus on plastic toys. His brothers, Karl and Gerhardt--who had been the directors of plastic and wood product manufacturing respectively--disagreed.

Godtfred was on a ferry to London when he ran into a buyer. He suggested that instead of creating exclusive toys, manufacturers of toys could develop a system in which sets of toys are interlocked. This led to the creation of the current Lego stud-and-tube design, patented on the 28th of January, 1958.

The Kiddicraft brick

In the 1940s, a company known as Kiddicraft introduced "Kiddicraft Self-locking Building Bricks". These were hollow rectangular plastic blocks that had four studs on top. Each stud could be inserted into studs of another block and allowed them to be stacked firmly.

Kirk Christiansen, Godtfred and a British manufacturer of the first injection molding machine were shown the bricks by a salesperson to demonstrate the kind of toys they could create. Kirk Christiansen, whether he knew or not that the bricks were patentable copied them and renamed them Lego. It was the beginning of a toy industry that continues to generate billions in the present. Hilary Fisher Page committed suicide in the year 1957. She was the creator of Kiddicraft.

The Lego bricks are now one of the most well-known toys in the world. The fact that these bricks are strong and durable, as well as being children-friendly is the reason they are so popular. They can be built into anything from cities to spaceships, and have inspired countless projects by children all over the world.

Godtfred's idea for the stud-and-tube system was a result of an interaction with a toy buyer. The buyer suggested that toy makers could create a system in which toys sets can be interconnected and used to construct various kinds of structures. The Lego system was created from this concept. Sets that contained furniture pieces and dollhouses were released in 1971. The company's transportation options expanded with boat and ship sets, which included hull pieces that floated.

The Town Plan

Lego's Technic series, which featured mechanical components that were detailed set the standard for the 1980s. Nine years later it introduced the yellow Minifigure citizens which are featured in themed play sets. Lego also introduced Duplo in the same year, the larger range of blocks designed for children who can't handle the small bricks that were originally used.

Lego has become a global toy empire with 10 theme parks and movies franchises. It is also a brand that has maintained an overwhelmingly loyal following amongst its customers despite all this expansion. Lego is renowned for its loyal customers due to the fact that it feels more like a friend instead of a commercial enterprise.

Ninjago is a theme that has been adopted by a number of.

Lego has become far more than an ordinary toy. In 1998 it was dubbed Toy of the Century, overtaking Barbie and teddy bears, and it has grown into a media empire with books, television shows and theme park experiences.

The company also offers an item called Mindstorms of programmable robotics that has helped shape its education strategies. Its underlying educational theory that is influenced by Seymour Papert's constructivism, is that children learn best through building things.

Ninjago is now the primary theme at Lego conventions and also the film inspired massive collaborative builds. The very first LEGO set, Ninjago City, 70620 was a major influencer for other LEGO themes.
